Why sitting is hard on a car
Fuel goes stale and can gum up a carburetor. Rubber hoses dry out. Brake fluid absorbs moisture. Batteries die. Critters build nests.
What we check first
- Fuel condition, tank, lines and filter
- Battery and charging
- Ignition
- Brakes, fluid and hoses
- Oil, coolant, belts, hoses and tires
Getting it running
After inspection, a sitting classic can often be brought back. Rafael will explain what he found and what it will take.
Fuel is usually the first problem
Gasoline breaks down over time. After a long sit, it can leave varnish in the tank, lines and carburetor. Running stale fuel through a carburetor that’s been sitting is a common cause of hard starts and poor running.
We look at the fuel first so we don’t pull old fuel and debris into the engine.
Brakes before the first drive
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and wheel cylinders and hoses age even when a car isn’t driven. Before a sitting classic goes back on the road, we inspect the brakes so the first drive isn’t a surprise.
