Car A/C Blowing Warm Air? What’s Usually Wrong

Short answer: Most of the time the system is low on refrigerant because of a leak. It can also be a compressor, clutch, fan or electrical problem. Finding the cause beats topping it off.

Common causes

  • Refrigerant leak
  • Compressor or clutch not engaging
  • Condenser fan not working
  • Electrical faults like a relay, fuse or pressure switch
  • Blend door problems that mix in heat

Why a top-off isn’t a repair

A/C is a sealed system. If it’s low, refrigerant got out somewhere. We check for the leak first, then recharge after repairs.

Simple checks you can do

Make sure the A/C button is on and the temperature is set to cold. Listen for the compressor clutch clicking on when the A/C is turned on, and check whether the fan in front of the radiator runs. Note whether the air gets colder when you drive versus when you’re stopped.

These details help narrow down whether the problem is refrigerant, the compressor, airflow or electrical.

Southern California heat

In Fullerton summers, a weak A/C is more than uncomfortable. We test the system, find the leak or failed part, explain the repair and quote before we work, then recharge after repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my A/C work on the highway but not in traffic?

That can point to the condenser fan or airflow, since there’s less air moving at low speed.

Is it bad to run the A/C low on refrigerant?

It can be hard on the compressor. Have it checked.
