Steady vs. flashing
A steady light is a heads-up. A flashing light is urgent. Reduce speed and avoid hard acceleration until it’s diagnosed.
Why a code isn’t a diagnosis
A code tells us which system reported a problem, not which part failed. A misfire code could be a plug, a coil, an injector or a vacuum leak. That’s why Rafael tests before replacing parts.
Common causes
- Loose or worn gas cap
- Oxygen or other sensor faults
- Ignition misfires
- Vacuum leaks
- Emissions system faults
Note on smog checks
We don’t perform smog checks, but we diagnose and repair the problems that cause a check engine light.
What to tell us when you call
Let us know if the light is steady or flashing, when it came on, and whether the car feels different: rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy or a new smell. If you recently filled up, mention that too, since a loose gas cap is a common trigger.
Write down anything you notice, like the light coming on only when the engine is cold or only on the freeway. Those patterns help with diagnosis.
How we diagnose it
Rafael reads the stored codes and freeze-frame data, then tests the parts and circuits involved before recommending anything. You’ll get a plain-language explanation of what failed and a quote before we work. We work on foreign and domestic vehicles, including Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with the check engine light on?
If it’s steady and the car runs normally, usually for a short time. If it’s flashing, have it checked right away.
Will the light go off on its own?
Sometimes, if the fault was temporary. But the code stays stored, and the problem may return.
