Clues from the sound
- Rapid clicking: weak battery or poor connection.
- Single click, lights stay bright: possible starter or starter circuit.
- Cranks but won’t start: fuel, spark or sensor issue rather than the battery.
- Nothing at all: dead battery, cable or ignition switch.
Why we test instead of guess
Replacing a battery when the alternator is the problem leaves you stranded again. We test the battery, charging system, starter and cables together.
Before you call for a jump
Check that the battery terminals are tight and free of white or green corrosion. Make sure the car is in Park (or the clutch is pressed). Try turning the headlights on: if they’re dim or don’t come on, the battery is likely low.
If a jump gets you going but the car dies again later, the charging system may not be keeping up, and that’s the time to have it tested.
Classic cars and older wiring
Older cars add their own challenges: aging cables, corroded grounds and original wiring. Wiring, charging and no-start problems are part of our classic car work, and we test before we replace parts.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a car battery last?
It varies with heat and driving habits. Heat is hard on batteries, so testing it during service is a good idea.
Can a bad alternator kill a new battery?
Yes. If the alternator isn’t charging, even a new battery will run down.
