Carbureted Classic Running Rough? Common Causes

Short answer: On a carbureted classic, a rough idle usually comes from a vacuum leak, an idle mixture that’s off, a sticking choke, or an ignition problem like worn plugs, points or timing.

Start with the basics

Before blaming the carburetor, check the ignition: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points and timing. A weak spark feels a lot like a fuel problem.

Common carburetor issues

  • Vacuum leaks at hoses or gaskets
  • Sticking choke
  • Dirty idle circuits after sitting
  • Float level off
  • Idle mixture out of adjustment

Getting it tuned right

Carb and ignition work is a big part of what we do for classic owners. We check them together so the fix lasts.

Tell us about the symptoms

Is it rough only when cold, only when hot, or all the time? Does it stumble when you step on the gas, or only at idle? Does it smell rich? These clues point us toward the choke, the accelerator pump, a vacuum leak or the ignition.

If the car has been sitting, mention that too. Dirty idle circuits are common after a car sits.

What customers say

One customer wrote that Rafael “not only fixed it but he actually made it better than the original tune setup.” We check the carburetor and ignition together so the fix lasts.
