Why Are My Brakes Squealing? A Fullerton Driver’s Guide

Short answer: A high-pitched squeal often means the pads are worn down to their wear indicators. Grinding usually means metal on metal and needs attention right away. Either way, have the brakes inspected.

What the sounds usually mean

  • Squeal when braking: often the wear indicator on the pads, or glazed pads.
  • Grinding: pads may be worn through, which damages rotors.
  • Squeak in the morning that goes away: often surface rust after the car sits.
  • Pulling to one side: can be a sticking caliper, a hose or contaminated pads.

When to stop driving

If the pedal sinks to the floor, the red brake light is on, or you hear loud grinding, don’t keep driving. Call a shop.

What we check

At Cedillo’s, Rafael measures the pads and rotors, checks calipers, hoses and fluid, and shows you what he found. We quote before we work. Rafael completed Bosch brake technology training in 2024.

Squeal vs. squeak vs. grind: a quick test

Pay attention to when the noise happens. If it only squeals when you press the pedal, it’s almost always brake-related. If you hear it while driving with your foot off the pedal, a wear indicator may be touching the rotor, or the noise may come from a wheel bearing or something else entirely.

Try to notice whether the sound comes from the front or rear and whether it changes with speed. That information helps us find the problem faster when you bring the car in.

Classic cars with drum brakes

Drum brakes make different noises than discs. Scraping, a pedal that has to be pumped, or a pull to one side can mean a leaking wheel cylinder or shoes that need adjustment. We service drum and early disc systems on classic cars and trucks.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with squealing brakes?

Usually for a short time, but it’s a warning. Have them inspected soon so a pad replacement doesn’t turn into rotor replacement.

How often should brakes be inspected?

A good habit is to have them checked at oil changes and whenever you notice a new noise or feel.
